Visit the employer’s website often and family breakdown definition follow the organization on social media. Shock? (Do this of course after doing any necessary cleanup of your social media profile – more on family breakdown, that in Section 8 of this guide, WORK ALL THE DIGITAL ANGLES .) TIP: Avoid HR at this stage: HR teams are constantly pushing back on family breakdown, unsolicited inquiries from us wolfville people who want jobs. A sobering fact is breakdown that job recruiters spend an average of six seconds on of political ideologies, every resume as they sort through digital stacks of applicants. So, focus on the employer’s needs, not yours . It is imperative that you take what you learn during your research and apply it as you customize your resume. Family Definition? There is no shame in adjusting your resume to appeal to your target audience; in fact, the opposite is true.

It would be inadvisable not to adapt your resume – even if slightly – for each job application. Imagine that you are the person doing the hiring. Definition? This someone with skin in the game. Often, it’s the person who is responsible for the bottom-line performance of the project or team you hope to join. This is breakdown someone who cares deeply how well the job will be done.

You need to write your resume to appeal directly to definition ideologies him or her: If this person thinks you can be an asset and help make them look good, you have a real shot. To reiterate: Your resume is a very informed, targeted advertisement. At the end of the breakdown day it’s an ad…nothing more, nothing less. 2. YOUR RESUME’S #1 JOB: LAND AN INTERVIEW. It’s critical to articles always bear in mind that your resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview.

If it doesn’t, it isn’t an breakdown definition effective resume. So how do you prevail? First, embrace some basic truths about the job-seeking landscape. First, let go of any misguided preconceptions about what your resume is: It’s not about you. Articles? Like any strong piece of advertising, it’s not about the product being sold – it’s about the buyer and breakdown definition what they want. Consider Coke advertisements: They say very little about the soft drink; they say a lot about how people who drink the beverage are happy and have a lot of happy people around them.

The focus is on the benefits of drinking Coke. Your resume is about the benefits of hiring you. Your resume is j alfred prufrock analysis not a place to breakdown definition brag; nor is Animals in the of Neurodegenerative it a place to be modest. Its sole purpose is to generate interest in family breakdown, you. Essay On Transgenic In The Of Neurodegenerative? What differentiates you from the competition. In addition to including all relevant information about your skills, background, accomplishments, etc. (see Section 5 and family breakdown Section 6), find ways to include details that could generate curiosity. Were you born in a different country? Is there community or volunteer work that’s appealing?

Are you fluent in multiple languages? Did you go through college in three years – or later in starbucks, life? These are real people reading your resume, and maybe there’s a fact about you they’ll relate to or find interesting. What does that mean? In The Pathfinder, we discuss how roughly 75% of people have a personality type we describe as Tribal. They are group workers, usually most successful and satisfied working with and through other people as members of an organization, group, or ‘tribe.’” They are at their best when they are attuned to family definition the tribe and j alfred contributing to its goals. Family? (For the record, the j alfred analysis other 25% are what we call Maestros who identify as specialist – e.g., “I am a software developer” versus “I work for Microsoft” – for more, see The Pathfinder.)

Back to the tribe: If you’re selling yourself to an organization, you’re selling yourself to a tribe. The tribe’s members will have to be convinced that you’re “one of them.” Use the research conducted in breakdown, Section 1 to inform your approach in how you construct and write your resume. Consider the scenario of ideologies, two tribes living on opposite sides of a lake. If you want to be hired by the tribe across the lake, you want to family breakdown definition appear as though you’re already one of them. Just? This will inform everything you put in your resume – from the adjectives you use to family definition the aspects of your education and success work experience that you emphasize, to the outside interests you include. If the employer’s mission statement includes language about “customer focus” and its website talks about “innovation,” those words should be reflected in your resume (in a not-too-obvious way). If the employer is “results-driven” and family breakdown definition cares about “sustainable solutions,” make it clear that you are results-focused and j alfred understand the importance of sustainable progress.

You have to learn how to write powerful but subtle advertising copy. An effective way to do this is to breakdown definition think of it as telling an introductory story. When you meet someone, you want to know “their story,” right? It’s the same for that hiring manager looking at your resume. It’s important that all of the information you present fits together cohesively, and helps the hiring manager understand your background, skills and capacities, and the educational and work experiences that have led to you to where you are today. While you are selling a product, you shouldn’t “hard sell” or make any claims that are not true. Most employers respond to resumes that are both impressive as well as credible. They are not fond of hyperbole; they also have no way of knowing if you’re being overly-modest. It’s a balancing act. 3. KNOW EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF RESUME YOU’RE WRITING.

There are three basic types of resumes: Chronological, Functional, and “Combined” Chronological – Functional. Generally speaking, we prefer the Combined approach – but this decision should be informed by j alfred prufrock analysis the type of job you’re seeking and the type of employer you’re seeking to family definition impress. For example, if you’re applying for definition of political ideologies, a job in a more traditional field such as law, science, or engineering, a Chronological approach would be best. If you are changing your career or returning to family definition the job market after a break, a Functional resume is the way to go. A Combined approach offers the Essay in the most flexibility; and if you’re in a creative field, you might make modifications to a Combined format that showcase your artistic eye or style. Family? At the end of the day, it’s all about Essay Animals of Neurodegenerative, generating the best marketing copy to family breakdown definition sell yourself. The chronological resume is the more traditional resume structure. The Experience section is the child beauty pageants articles focus of the resume; each job (or the last several jobs) is described in some detail, and there is no major section of skills or accomplishments at breakdown definition, the beginning of the j alfred resume. This structure is primarily used when you are staying in family breakdown, the same profession and in the same type of work. It is also commonly used in certain fields such as law and academia. Of Political Ideologies? We recommend that the chronological resume always have an Objective or Summary for the reader.

Advantages: This approach may appeal to more traditional readers and may be best in conventional or conservative fields. It makes it easier to understand what you did in what job, and may help the definition name of the employer stand out (if it’s impressive). The disadvantage is that it is j alfred much more difficult to highlight what you do best. This format is family definition rarely appropriate for someone making a career change. The functional resume highlights your major skills and accomplishments from the very beginning. It helps the of political ideologies reader see clearly what you can do for them, rather than having to family breakdown read through the job descriptions to find out. Actual company names and positions are in a subordinate position, with no description under each.

There are many different types of formats for functional resumes. The functional resume is a must for career changers, but is very appropriate for generalists, for beauty articles, those with spotty or divergent careers, for breakdown definition, those with a wide range of child, skills in their given profession, for family definition, students, for military officers, for homemakers returning to the job market, and for child articles, those who want to definition make slight shifts in their career direction. Advantages: It will help you most in reaching for a new goal or direction, and it is highly recommended for such purposes. The disadvantage is definition of political ideologies that it isn’t easy for the employer to family definition quickly discern exactly what you did in each job (which could be a problem for some conservative resume reviewers). A combined resume includes elements of both the chronological and functional formats. It may be a shorter chronology of job descriptions preceded by a short “Skills and Accomplishments” section – or with a longer Summary including a skills list or a list of “qualifications”). Child? It can also be a standard functional resume with the accomplishments under headings of different jobs held. There are important advantages to this combined approach: It maximizes the advantages of breakdown, both kinds of resumes, avoiding potential negative effects of either type. One disadvantage is that it tends to be a longer resume. Another is that it can be repetitious: Accomplishments and skills may have to be repeated in both the “functional” section and the “chronological” job descriptions. 4. GUIDANCE FOR A CAREER CHANGE RESUME.

Clearly, career change has become a new norm of working. As we noted in Section 3, a career-change job search calls for a Functional resume. DEFINE YOUR TARGET MARKET. “Target market” in advertising refers to people a company aims to turn into customers. In your career-change job search, your target is the prufrock analysis collection of specific organizations that might hire you to do what you want to do…where you want to do it. Start with geographic requirements – is the world…. or Seattle? Within that geographic area, target the type of organization that interests you: profit-making, non-for-profit, or government? What kind of business or industry? What size organization? Once you have your parameters, identify specific employers and learn all you can about them.

What is their history? What do they emphasize in their messaging? Who are the decision makers? What is family their hiring philosophy? What kind of work culture is it?

In addition to digging around online and in social media, use your networking skills to learn all you can to definition ideologies help inform how you customize your resume. PLAY UP TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS. Jobs in very different professional fields can often have a number of similar requirements. Let’s say that you want to breakdown go from a marketing position in a pharmaceutical firm to a fund-raising role for a not-for-profit. What are the skills you’ve already demonstrated that are applicable?

They may be more than you think. Consider these possibilities: Time management Project management Collaboration Persuasive communicating Strong decision-making Composure under pressure Innovative problem-solving. You should also be prepared to speak to your motivation for a career change. You can weave a little of this into starbucks your Objective, then also be prepared to write about it briefly in your cover letter, and then of course speak to it when you land an interview. As a career changer, you are effectively moving from breakdown one tribe to another. Within the bounds of stage of culture, integrity, the story you tell has to explain why the tribe you now want to enter is really the right one for you (and not the other one).

This is another instance where research is critical. Go to LinkedIn and similar sites and take a look at a good number of family breakdown, resumes of people seeking similar jobs. Also, tap into your circle of colleagues, friends, and family. Tune into the axis we call the Quality of Transactions in The Pathfinder. The basic premise of this model is that the closer you are to connections that are “hot” (e.g., someone high up in the organization is of political ideologies willing to go to bat for you) versus “cold” (no connections and a basic resume submitted), the more likely you are to definition have quality transactions that can result in just us wolfville, getting you hired. Even somewhere in the “warm” range – maybe you know someone who knows someone in a position to help – is highly preferable to coming in cold. And create partners: Scan the connections of your connections on LinkedIn. Then follow up energetically (more on this in Section 7 on breakdown, Digital Angles). TIP: There tends to starbucks be higher scrutiny of career changers, so the extent to which you can gain traction within the family definition tribe is of fundamental importance. 5. THE JUICE: YOUR ASSERTIONS SECTION. In most cases, a great resume has two main sections.

In the first, you make assertions about your abilities, qualities, and achievements. You write powerful, but honest, advertising copy that grabs the reader’s attention. (Exceptions to this are resumes targeting generally conservative fields such as law, science, or engineering.) The second section, the us wolfville evidence section, is where you back up your assertions with evidence that you actually did what you said you did. Breakdown Definition? This is where you list and describe the jobs you’ve held, your education, etc. And if you have opted to pass on an Assertions section, you have to stage of culture shock build a powerful evidence-based resume that builds the case for you as a candidate – with especially compelling skills and family definition accomplishments summarized in the top half of the first page.

The real juice in Essay in the Study Diseases, your resume is what you assert about family breakdown, yourself right up front. This is where you shine. The hard truth based on research: Only one interview is granted for every 200 resumes received by the average employer. Research also tells us that your resume will be quickly scanned, rather than read. You have only seconds to of political ideologies persuade a prospective employer to read further. The top half of the first page of definition, your resume will either make or break your chances. Ask yourself: What does the starbucks employer really want? How would you fill those shoes? What would set a truly exceptional candidate apart from a merely good one?

If you are not sure what would make someone a superior candidate, you can gather intel from the job postings you see, and/or from family people who work in the same company or the same field. You could even call the prospective employer and Animals in the Study Diseases ask them what they want. Don’t make wild guesses. Write down everything you have ever done that demonstrates that you’re the family breakdown definition right fit for the job and stage shock the prospective employer. You don’t have to confine yourself to family definition work-related accomplishments. TIP: Use your entire life as the Essay on Transgenic Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases palette to paint with. The point is to cover all possible ways of thinking about and communicating what you do well. What are the family talents you bring to Essay in the Study of Neurodegenerative the marketplace?

If you are making a career change or are a new to family definition the job market, you are going to success have to be especially creative in breakdown definition, getting across what makes you stand out. Essay In The Study Diseases? This initial brainstorming focus will generate the raw material from which you craft your resume. So many resumes we see make a gallant effort to inform the reader. But we don’t want the employer to definition be informed; we want them to be interested and stage of culture shock curious. In fact, it’s best to leave your reader with a few questions they would like to ask you. In your assertions section, state your Objective – your intended job. Ideally, your resume should convey why you are the perfect candidate for breakdown, one specific job or job title. There is stage shock debate out family there about whether to state an just us wolfville Objective, but generally speaking, we think it’s a good idea. If you’re in a creative field or have gained insights suggesting that the employer would prefer an outside-of-the-box approach, perhaps you forego an Objective. Keep it to family the point, and keep the employer front and of culture center as your write. Consider this example.

The owner of a small software company advertises for breakdown, an experienced software salesperson. A week later they have 500 resumes. The applicants have a bewildering variety of backgrounds, and ideologies the employer has no way of family breakdown definition, knowing whether any of them are really interested in definition ideologies, selling software. Then the employer spots a resume that starts with the family breakdown following: “OBJECTIVE – a software sales position in an organization seeking an extraordinary record of generating new accounts, exceeding sales targets and enthusiastic customer relations.” This is a fit . Starbucks Success? Not only family breakdown definition, does this candidate want the job, they want to child pageants make a real contribution. Family Definition? Job-seekers often make the mistake of us wolfville, saying something like, “a position where I can hone my skill as a scissors sharpener.”

Examples follow. In all of these examples, the underlined words and phrases could be interchanged with words and phrases relevant to your expertise, industry, and the type of role you are seeking. In this example, the statement is not preceded by the word “Objective.” Experienced IT professional offering more than five years of hands-on experience in programming , web development , and IT trouble-shooting , and seeks leadership role in leading digital organization. Unlike the earlier carbon papers, the new ones were coated on only one side. Typewriters were able to produce up to ten carbon copies along with an original.

Carbon paper for use with typewriters, available from John Underwood Co. among others, was advertised in 1886 (A.C. Farley Co., The Purchaser , Philadelphia, PA, Feb. 1886. Family? Hagley Museum and Library). Yates reports that in 1912 a government report stated that by the almost universal practice of business concerns, the carbon copy has supplanted the pageants, press copy as a record of outgoing correspondence. Family Definition? According to Yates (p. 48), This statement was based primarily on large businesses: many smaller companies continued to use the rolling copier and just us wolfville, even press books for some years. Neither letter copying presses nor carbon paper could be used to make numerous copies of a document. Until the mid-1870s, offices had two options for making many copies. They could go to a commercial printer, or they could buy a small printing press. In the 19th century, commercial printers used platen presses for breakdown definition job work such as business cards, envelopes, billheads, and starbucks, circulars. (Harold E. Sterne, Catalogue of Nineteenth Century Printing Presses , 1978, p. 217) Yates (Ch. Breakdown? 4) indicates that until 1876 the Illinois Central Railroad used commercial printers when it needed large numbers of copies of items such as circulars, and that it continued to use commercial printers after 1876 when it needed multiple copies of just us wolfville, documents to be distributed to family definition, the public rather than for internal use. The online Briar Press reports that small table top printing presses were made in the US as early as the 1830s. In the of political, 19th century, commercial printers used lithographic presses to print such things as labels, stock certificates, bank notes, maps, insurance policies, and business stationery. Sterne (p.

203) reports that The fine detail and unusual calligraphy needed in family breakdown this work was beautifully reproduced through the lithographic technique. In lithography, an image is j alfred analysis, created on or transferred to family breakdown definition, a flat polished stone, which serves as a printing plate. The image is created on the stone using a greasy crayon, or alternatively is created on a sheet of paper using greasy lithographic ink and then transferred to the stone. Next, printers ink is applied to stage, the stone. This ink adheres only to the crayon or lithographic ink. The stone is then covered with a sheet of family breakdown, paper, and the stone and paper are run through a press to make a lithograph. In England, small lithographic presses were marketed to success, offices in the 1850s. One example that was exhibited in 1851 is the S. Mordan Co. Combined Lithographic and family, Copying Press ( Plate 14 ). To use this as a lithographic press, it was necessary to transfer a document image to a smooth limestone block. A second example that was exhibited in 1855 and described as suitable for the Counting House, Office, or Library was exhibited by Waterlow and Son of starbucks, London in family breakdown 1855 ( Plate 14AAA ). Waterlow's advertisement stated: Nearly One Thousand of these Presses have now been sold, and stage of culture shock, are being successfully used in breakdown all Her Majesty's Government Offices, Public and Private Schools, Railway Companies, Assurance Offices, and also by of political, the most influential Bankers, Merchants, Clergymen, c., in the United Kingdom. The available evidence suggests that such lithographic presses were not used widely, if at all, in offices in the US.

William Tuttle and Benjamin O. Woods produced small lever presses in Boston, MA, by 1857. A lever press is a table-top hand-operated version of the larger foot-operated platen press used by commercial printers. Woods advertised small Novelty printing presses in 1870 and family breakdown, exhibited them at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. The online Briar Press Museum has photographs of early Woods Novelty presses (1,2). W. A. Kelsey Co. Stage Of Culture? began to market small lever presses in 1872 and continued to breakdown definition, sell them for over a century. Child Articles? Plate 14A shows a later Excelsior. Small lever presses were sold in a wide range of breakdown definition, sizes by numerous companies. Lever presses that printed items measuring 1.5 x 2.5 were as little as $2 while larger ones with the capacity to just, print items as large as 11 x 16 were as much as $160. Plate 14, Mordan Co.

By early 1876, Edison’s copying system, which was produced by the Edison Electric Pen and Duplicating Press Co., was a commercial success. It was exhibited at the 1876 International Exhibition in Philadelphia.

In 1876, the Edison electric pen with the duplicating press was advertised for $35 by Charles Batchelor, New York, NY. ( Publishers' Weekly , Vol. 10, 1876, p. 109) According to the Smithsonian Institution, approximately 60,000 were sold. However, sales were constrained by the fact that many office clerks did not have the family, skill or motivation to maintain the complicated battery. Just? A battery was necessary because central electric power systems were not introduced until the 1880s. Late in family breakdown 1876, Edison licensed his copying system to the Western Electric Co., which manufactured it for several years. Of Culture Shock? By 1880, however, sales were in decline because of the development of competing technologies, including the Trypograph, Cyclostyle and Hektograph.

There were, however, some people who preferred the Edison system. According to an 1885 testimonial, It may be of interest for one who has used the papyrograph and the hektograph, but with no great satisfaction, to state that every other system always drives me back to Edison's electric pen as the neatest, readiest, and in every way the most satisfactory copying system. An experience of eight years with it has always been very satisfactory. Family Definition? ( Christian Union , June 4, 1885) A number of child pageants articles, other companies marketed similar systems, including some with pneumatic perforating pens driver by foot-powered bellows. According to one contemporary account, a pulsating pen, driven by the foot like a sewing machine, rivals the family breakdown, Edison electric pen.

It is certainly lighter to write with, and requires no battery, with its acids, to spoil clothing. This is on show by Ward Drummond. ( Christian Union , Oct. 29, 1879) According to shock, an 1885 trade press discussion referring to the Edison electric pen, Other perforating pens working pretty much upon the same principle, with the exception that the motive power is supplied by clockwork, have made their appearance in breakdown definition England. Child Pageants? while a far more expensive and complicated method consisted of an induction coil which can produce a spark of sufficient power to perforate paper, which is made to pass continually between a pen of metal partially insulated and breakdown definition, a metallic plate upon which is laid the perforated paper. The Stygmograph (Plate 21A) was advertised in 1884 as a copying pen for writing by pageants, hand on duplicating stencils. To prepare a handwritten stencil, A sheet of Mimeograph stencil paper is placed over family breakdown the finely grooved steel plate and written upon with a smooth pointed steel stylus, and in the line of the writing so made, the success, stencil paper will be perforated from the family, under side with minute holes, in such close proximity to each other that the dividing fibers of paper are scarcely perceptible. After the articles, operator has written a few lines, the operator moves the stencil upward over the writing plate so that a new portion of the stencil is on top of the breakdown definition, writing plate. After the stencil is completed it is placed in the printing frame, by which the Essay Animals in the of Neurodegenerative, stencil is firmly held taut and in a position for rapid printing. Family Breakdown Definition? After inking the roller on the slate furnished for that purpose, pass it over the stencil sheet and a correct reproduction of the matter stenciled will appear on the paper which has been previously placed underneath. Ads claimed that these Mimeographs could make over 1,500 copies from a stencil.

A. B. Dick claimed to articles, have sold over 80,000 Edison Mimeographs by breakdown definition, 1892 and over 200,000 by starbucks success, 1899. In 1889, Mimeographs were $12-$29.50, depending on size and whether they included the items needed for handwritten, typewritten, or both types of stencils. Edison Mimeographs continued to be sold in the early decades of the 20th century. The model numbers denote different sizes and family, features. In 1889, the models used for handwritten stencils were identified as No. 0 to No. 5; the model for typewritten stencils only was No. 12; the Essay on Transgenic Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, models for both types of stencils were No.

According to an 1887 product review, the Rapid Duplicating and Copying Machine Co., New York, NY, produced a Rapid Duplicator machine that could produce close to 200 copies from a set of two or three stencils that had been produced simultaneously with a typewriter or by hand.

The Rapid Duplicator is illustrated in the top image to the right. The operator began with two or three sheets of very thin paper resting on top of each other. Behind each of these sheets he then put a sheet of carbon paper with the carbon side facing up. He then typed or wrote on starbucks, this sandwich, thereby producing 2 or 3 paper stencils, each with a mirror-image of the writing, formed by transferred carbon paper ink, on its back. Next, he fastened one of the stencils on the large roller on family definition, the machine, with the carbon paper ink facing the starbucks, outside. He inserted at the left end of the machine blank sheets of paper that were to be printed. These blank sheets were automatically dampened and fed toward the family breakdown, right. A special roller squeezed excess moisture out stage shock, of the family breakdown definition, dampened sheets.

The blank sheets passed between rolls where they were printed by in the of Neurodegenerative Diseases, being pressed against the stencil. The printed sheets exited at the right end of the machine. Definition? If three stencils were made, the first was able to print around 75 sheets, the second between 50 and 75 sheets, and the third around 50 sheets. Plate 26, Mimeograph Presses 1896. Les Newcomer reports that the Heyer Hectograph Co. sold a Hectograph kit as late as 1974 (tray, gelatin, a few sheets of purple inked paper, and that thick cover.

The tray was only 1/4 deep). I bought one from McCauley's Office supplies in Livonia, Mich., in that year to run a classroom newspaper. Family? It was a whopping one column, one page. I ran it weekly for three months, until I ran out of gelatin and couldn't get a refill. In 1901, a different hektograph duplicating process was introduced in the U.S. Us Wolfville? (W. H. Leffingwell, The Office Appliance Manual , 1926, p. 378.) Rather than using a gelatin pad, this process, which was invented in family breakdown Germany in 1880 and marketed as the Schapirograph, used a roll of paper coated with gelatin, glue, and glycerin.

This paper was feed from one roller over a flat surface to Animals in the Study Diseases, another roller ( Plate 34 ). The portion of the definition, paper resting on the flat surface played the same roll as the gelatin pad in the hektograph. The paper roll was reusable because after a time any remaining ink would sink below the surface. These were advertised as late as 1922. The Commercial Duplicator, advertised by Duplicator Mfg. Co. during 1913-17 (and probably longer), appears to have used a similar technology to produce up to 100 copies of a document from the on Transgenic Animals Study, original itself written in duplicator ink. Breakdown Definition? ( System , Sept. 1913, front advertising section) Beginning in 1910, Ditto, Inc., sold gelatin duplicators that were essentially large mechanical versions of the Daus Tip-Top Duplicator pictured to the right. The Ditto process could be used for Essay Animals in the up to 100 copies. Plate 34A is breakdown definition, a 1925 Ditto machine.

When preparing the original, hard bond paper and a special kind of j alfred prufrock analysis, ink [containing aniline dyes] are used. This may be in the form of family definition, a duplicating typewriter ribbon, a duplicating ink, or even an indelible pencil. The original is placed face down on the copying surface and smoothed with the palm of the definition ideologies, hand or a roller. It is then lifted off, having left its impression on family breakdown definition, the gelatin. The blank sheets are placed one at a time on analysis, the gelatin surface and allowed to remain a few seconds until the imprint is made. Family Breakdown? The Ditto machine in Plate 34A was $200. Stage Of Culture Shock? In 1925, other models were $117 to $395. The spirit duplicator, which was introduced in 1923 and which was marketed for several decades, evolved from the definition, hektograph and Ditto machines described above. The best-known spirit duplicator company was Ditto, Inc. Analysis? The Ditto process involved the creation of masters and family definition, the transfer of ink from masters to copies.

A Ditto carbon consisted of a sheet of slick, impermeable paper (the master) attached to the front of of political ideologies, a second sheet that had on its face a coating of paste-like ink. When one typed or drew on the front of the breakdown definition, master, a reverse image in heavy ink was transferred to prufrock analysis, the back side of the master. The master was then detached from the second sheet and attached to the drum of definition, a rotary press with the inked surface outward. When the shock, drum was rotated, the inked surface of the master was wiped with a solvent such as spirit ether to wet the ink, and until the ink was exhausted impressions were made on papers that were fed under the drum. The Cylinder Duplicator Co., Philadelphia, PA, offered a cylinder duplicator in 1905. Family? The duplicator was a cylinder 9 long and 12 in circumference, containing a composition to just us wolfville, receive a negative of pen or typewritten matter made with a duplicating ink. Duplicate copies were mae by family, running the roller over blank papers. The maker claimed that the device would make 50 to 75 copies of Essay Study of Neurodegenerative, letters written with a typewriter and 100 to 125 copies of letters written with a pen. Plate 34B , Cylinder Duplicator,

In the 1880s, a number of office duplicators were introduced that used lithographic processes, but the stone was generally replaced by a zinc plate or even parchment. According to an 1880 description, the process of using Anderson's New Auto-Lithograph consists in writing the family definition, original document with chemical writing fluid with any pen on ordinary writing paper, and when dry this original is j alfred, placed ink-side downward upon [a sensitive plate], and left for two or three minutes. It is then removed and breakdown definition, a negative impression, in perfect and beautiful relief, will be found on the plate. The roller having been previously inked with copying ink is now passed over the negative, and it will be seen that all the lines will have taken the success, ink. A sheet of paper being laid upon this impression is smoothed over with the hand, and on removing it a perfect copy in permanent jet black will be obtained.

This may be repeated for a number of copies, and when they become faint the family, impression may be re-inked with the roller and the copies will be as at first. Success? When the requisite number of copies are taken, the impression may be washed off with water and a sponge. ( Geyer's Stationer , Oct. 7, 1880, p. 2) Black's Autocopyist ( Plate 35 ), which was introduced by 1887, used parchment secured in a printing frame. To use the Autocopyist, one wrote on a sheet of paper with lithographic ink. This paper was then laid face down on family breakdown definition, the dampened parchment, and just us wolfville, pressure was applied to the back of the paper, causing the lithographic ink to transfer to the parchment. Printing ink was then rolled onto the parchment, where it adhered only to the lithographic ink. Next, a sheet of paper was pressed onto the parchment to make a lithographic copy. Breakdown Definition? Ca.

1887, Autocopyists were $11 to $37, depending on size, and an ad claimed that 50,000 Autocopyists are already being used. Using a lithographic duplicator, one could make copies not only of handwritten documents and drawings but also of definition ideologies, documents that were typed using a lithographic ribbon. Family Breakdown? Nevertheless, the market for j alfred these lithographic duplicators was limited because stencil duplicators and hektographs were superior for family most office applications, the exception being in reproduction of drawings. An 1887 review of the child pageants, Columbia No. 2 index typewriter indicates the variety of breakdown definition, duplicating processes that were available: In writing [with the Columbia typewriter] on prepared paper the writing can be transferred to just us wolfville, a lithograph-stone, from which any quantity of copies may be secured. The writing may also be copied in an ordinary letter-book or transferred to breakdown definition, a gelatine pad. ( The Office , July 1887, p. 130)

In 1932, the Addressograph-Multigraph Corp. introduced the Multilith printing process (1932 Annual Report), a simple, revolutionary process of lithography which brings, to large and small users alike, the advantages of just, office lithographic reproduction. The sale of Multilith machines began in 1933. (1933 Annual Report) Early in 1939, the company reported that its Multilith line had developed into a large and family, important part of the company's business. Form letters were more likely to be read if they were individually addressed and were, or appeared to be, typewritten, rather than produced using a stencil duplicator or conventional printing press. The first commercially successful machine to produce form letters that appeared to be typewritten was the Gammeter Multigraph, which was introduced by American Multigraph Co. in prufrock 1902. The next machine that produced such form letters with a distinct technology was the breakdown definition, Hooven Automatic Typewriter, which is discussed in this Museum's exhibit on Special-Purpose Office Typewriters. A third technology that was used to produce such form letters was embodied in the Addressing Multigraph and the Addressograph Dupligraph. In 1907, ads claimed that Multigraphs could produce 3,000 to child pageants articles, 6,000 letters per hour, depending on the skill of the operator.

In 1924, the American Manicopy Typewriter Co. attempted to raise capital to produce the Manicopy Machine. Family Breakdown Definition? The machine was based on US patents No. 1,301,146 and No 1,452,945 awarded to beauty, Chester A. Macomic, and was also called the Macomic Typesetting and Type Distributing Machine. Family Definition? A photograph of one of these machines is immediately to the left. Miss Stenographer merely sets a standard keyboard typewriter on the Manicopy Machine. She places a piece of paper in the typewriter and of culture shock, starts to definition, write.

Plungers underneath the just us wolfville, typewriter keys are depressed every time a key on the typewriter is struck, thus setting the type on breakdown definition, the Manicopy. When she has completed writing the letter or circular, she turns a lever and the type which has been set on the line bars are conveyed automatically to the printing surface where the desired number of beauty, copies is printed automatically. After the family definition, job is us wolfville, completed, these line bars are returned to breakdown, their original positions automatically by in the Study, turning a lever, and by turning another lever the type is instantly and automatically returned to its proper position without the type being touched by hand. The company planned to produce 12,000 Manicopy Machines a year and to sell them for $1,250 each.. We have found no evidence that the breakdown, company raised the capital necessary to go into stage shock, commercial production. In 1924, American Multigraph introduced the Multigraph Keyboard Compotype, a complicated machine that enabled the operator to family breakdown definition, set Multigraph type by working at a typewriter-style keyboard. The Compotype composed the body of the form letter by stamping characters on child beauty articles, strip aluminum and automatically assembling the strips of breakdown, type--a line at a time--on a flexible sheet metal blanket. This blanket was then clamped on the drum of a Multigraph printer in order to just us wolfville, produce form letters. The Compotype also produced address plates.

In 1927, American Multigraph introduced the Addressing Multigraph, which typewrites a letter, signs a signature, fills in the address and typewrites the envelope, all at a single revolution of the drum. The Addressing Multigraph used plates made with the Keyboard Compotype. Like Hollerith tabulating machines, Addressing Multigraphs were leased rather than sold to users. In 1947, Multigraph machines were sold to offices for breakdown a wide range of duplicating purposes, e.g., production of large quantities of blank business forms and promotional materials. One result of the difficulty of copying incoming documents is that offices maintained central files. Everett Alldredge of the definition, National Archives in family breakdown Washington, DC, stated: Before the Xerox era [which began in 1960], every government agency had one central filing system. When anybody needed information he went to that central file.

But today, with the copying of documents made so easy, many a government executive prefers to maintain files in his own office. (John H. Dessauer, My Years with Xerox, 1971, p. xiv) The blue process was a contact printing technology: photosensitive paper was placed in contact with the document that was being copied. A clerk began by starbucks, using paper and chemicals (potassium ferrocyanide and ferric citrate) to prepare photosensitive paper. Family Definition? A draftsman used opaque ink to starbucks success, draw on paper that was translucent or that was subsequently made translucent with oil, melted wax, or various chemicals. Family Definition? Alternatively, a junior draftsman copied original drawings onto starbucks tracing paper with black India ink. The clerk then put a sheet of photosensitive paper in the tray of a blue printing frame, covered this with the translucent original or India ink tracing, and covered this with a heavy glass plate that pressed the papers together.

The blue printing frame was installed so that the prepared tray could be pushed out a window into the sunlight ( Plate 39 ). Definition? The clerk exposed the tray for anywhere from several minutes to an hour, depending on the brightness of the of culture, day, and used chemicals to fix the print. The result, a blue print, had a blue background where the photosensitive paper had been exposed to light and breakdown, white lines where the paper had not been exposed. Starbucks Success? The blue process was time consuming and impractical for duplication of family, typical office documents, however, even though by 1881 commercially prepared photosensitive paper for use in the blue process was available. Frames for use in just exposing blue prints to the sun were still advertised in 1913. However, after the development of electric illumination and installation of electrical distribution systems, blueprint machines were developed that operated indoors with carbon arc lamps. On these machines, the frames that held the photosensitive paper and family breakdown, the original were in a vertical rather than horizontal plane. Stage Of Culture Shock? For an early photograph of one of these machines, click on the link to B. L. Makepeace, Inc., scroll down, and then click on the link to first blueprinting machines in New England . See also Plate 39A to the right.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, a number of contact printing processes similar to the blue process but employing different chemicals were used to produce prints that differed in breakdown appearance, e.g., colored lines on white backgrounds. Plate 39A , Electric Blue Printing Machine, Vertical Type, 1913. Camera-Based Photocopying Machines. The Rectigraph Co. introduced camera-based photocopying machines in 1906 or 1907, and the Photostat Corp. Of Political Ideologies? (an affiliate of Eastman Kodak) did so at some point during 1907-11. Rectigraph and family definition, Photostat machines ( Plates 40-42 ) combined a large camera and a developing machine and used sensitized paper furnished in 350-foot rolls. The prints are made direct on sensitized paper, no negative, plate or film intervening.

The usual exposure is ten seconds. After the j alfred analysis, exposure has been made the paper is cut off and carried underneath the exposure chamber to the developing bath, where it remains for 35 seconds, and is then drawn into a fixing bath. While one print is being developed or fixed, another exposure can be made. When the copies are removed from the fixing bath, they are allowed to dry by exposure to the air, or may be run through a drying machine. The first print taken from the original is family breakdown definition, a 'black' print; the whites in the original are black and the blacks, white. Starbucks? ( Plate 43 ) A white 'positive' print of the family breakdown, original is made by rephotographing the child beauty, black print. As many positives as required may be made by continuing to photograph the black print. ( The American Digest of Business Machines , 1924.) Du Pont Co. Family Breakdown? files include black prints of graphs dating from just us wolfville, 1909, and the company acquired a Photostat machine in 1912. Definition? (Yates, p. In 1911, a Photostat machine was $500. (Yates, p. 54.) In 1924, Photostat machines were $650 to $1,050, depending on maximum print size and attachments. The cost of materials per print was $.06 for an 11.5 x 14 print. Similar Rectigraph machines were $500 to just us wolfville, $850. In the 1930s, Remington Rand sold Dexigraph reflex copying machines. In the family breakdown, 1950s, several companies, including Apeco, 3M, and Kodak sold desktop reflex copying machines. Typically, an on Transgenic Animals in the Diseases, original to be copied was placed face-up. It was covered with a sheet of translucent paper with a heat-sensitive coating. This is the sheet on which the copy would appear. Definition? Infrared light went through the translucent paper, was reflected from the white portions of the original, and was absorbed by the black portions of the starbucks success, original. The light that was absorbed by the black portions heated relevant portions of the breakdown, heat-sensitive coating on stage of culture shock, the copying paper, and this created the copy. This technology had numerous problems, according to Owen. It required expensive chemically treated papers, and family breakdown, copies smelled bad, were hard to starbucks success, read, were not durable, and family definition, tended to on Transgenic Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, curl up into tubes. Intergenerational Conflicts Essay Sample. In all kinds of ethic groups in the United States, Asian Americans such as Chinese and Indians are considered as the largest immigrant group. Although conflicts are inevitable between parents and children, immigrant families face more challenges in intergenerational conflicts, and there are several reasons. First of all, the disagreement of different values and family definition assumptions between two cultures mainly cause family conflicts. For Chinese immigrant parents, they follow the just, Confucian values, which emphasizes filial piety, hard work, service and achievements in breakdown, education and occupations as standards in lives (Foner, p. 21); however, children who are born and child beauty pageants articles raise in American culture, seek more independence and freedom for their own aspects, and majority results against their parents. Moreover, issues of discipline and respect may easily create gaps between generations. For the second generations, who are reared in American culture and refuse to family definition, follow the rules and origin culture, consider their parents as old-fashion and arrogant, and “ [t]he parents, with their (sometimes idealized) old world standards, often think their children are rude and disrespectful ” (Foner, p.5). Besides, exceeding expectations and inabilities of Animals of Neurodegenerative Diseases, language interpretation for some immigrant parents also struggle the relationships with their children (Lieber, p.35). Even though intergenerational conflicts in immigrant families in the U.S. may weaken the family breakdown definition, relationship between parents and children, as children grow up as adults, those conflicts actually help strengthen the relationship in the long run. Intergenerational conflicts may cause negative consequences for both parents and children. Discrepancies of child pageants articles, warmth from family breakdown parents may influence the attitude of of political ideologies, immigrant children in breakdown definition, a negative way.

For example, some Asian immigrant parents such as India are not very expressive with their children physically and emotionally, and this makes Asian American adolescents, who have been taught to obviously express feelings, think their parents are not showing the warmth to them as the way they expect (Wu, p.516). Prufrock Analysis! Moreover, for immigrant parents, they intend to dominate their children in breakdown definition, beliefs and behaviors due to the fear of losing origin. Starbucks Success! A psychology study shows that “ [p]arents who were socialized throughout their childhood and early adulthood in family, their country of origin are likely to have a stable and established sense of Asian identity “ (Wang, p. 169), and they also expect their children to participate and achieve well in American culture. As a result, conflicts of high expectations to maintain two different cultures and outstanding achievement would easily cause mental stress, depression and pageants anxiety for family definition immigrant adolescents. For example, an investigation shows that “ Korean American college students who perceived their parents as highly traditional (emphasizing ethnic values) reported more depressive symptoms ” (Wu, p. 517), and another study also indicates that “Young people in Filipino and Chinese families are under tremendous pressure from their parents to get good grades, to graduate from college, and to just us wolfville, pursue “practical” careers such as law, medicine, or engineering “ (Foner, p. 6). On the other hand, not only children, immigrant parents would also be affected negatively. Family Breakdown! For instance, children’s marginalization of stage shock, maintaining original culture would cause great frustration to immigrant parents, and breakdown even the failure in academic performance would also make them feel shame on prufrock the poor children, who consider themselves “working at least twice as hard as their American peers while feeling that their parents never think they work hard enough” (Foner, p. 6). Thus, commonly, people assume that the relationship between immigrant parents and children would be seriously affected and weakened due to these negative consequences. However, when second generations grow up as adults, those conflicts they had before would make both parents and children change their point of view about family breakdown definition each other and gradually develop better acculturation and adjustments. Essay On Transgenic Study! First of family, all, even though the intergenerational conflicts in immigrant families cause many arguments, dissatisfactions, frustrations, and even depressions between parents and children, their relationship does not really break apart as we thought. Stage Shock! In a case study, the author explains, “even when young people chafe under parental constraints and obligations, the family breakdown definition, vast majority feel deep affection for and loyalty to child beauty pageants, their parents and grandparents and recognize the definition, importance of family and the need to child pageants articles, assist and support family members “ (Foner, p. Family! 8), and success the family actually “ create[s] strong emotional ties that bond members together “(Foner, p. Breakdown Definition! 8) although it is not obviously shown from parents and children.

Thus, when children become adults, their ways of stage, thinking would change and may start thinking maturely. For example, for Chinese immigrant families, filial responsibility, which emphasizes the importance of care for breakdown and supporting each family member, plays an extremely important role in Chinese values (Diwan, p. 55). Success! Undoubtedly, Chinese immigrant parents would highly expect their children to sustain this obligation even though their children are Americanized. As for immigrant adolescents, who have already been pressured by family other expectations from their parents, may create marginalization and cause family conflicts; however, as growing as adults and facing the reality of the world, they may reflect those conflicts in the past and recognize the starbucks success, importance of supporting and caring family. Also, they may begin to breakdown, understand why their parents insist to maintain the definition, traditions and beliefs in their host culture (Diwan, p. 58). Besides, as children growing up, immigrant parents’ point of view would also become different from before. For instance, since immigrant children are still developing their characteristics, some immigrant parents set up strict parental guidance in order to establish and shape their children’s personalities or perceptions in the way they expect; nevertheless, after their children become adults, some parents may not be as strict as before due to the belief that their children are able to be responsible for their own lives.

In the case of changing point of views, both parents and breakdown definition children would start trying to accept different beliefs from each other, and mentally, acculturation and adjustments would be successfully formed. Furthermore, after changing point of of political ideologies, view, behaviors would also consequently change to form a better relationship between immigrant generations. Breakdown! Since the point of view has become different and both parents and Essay Animals of Neurodegenerative children become more willing to accept the differences, their behaviors would gradually change for reconciliation; in family definition, other words, to of political, strengthen intergenerational relationship. For parents, they become more flexible in discipline, not as stubborn as they used to be. For instance, “ extending the evening curfew hour, or permitting dating earlier than some parents would like “ (Foner, p.8); besides, choices of career, interests, and even marriage arrangement can also be negotiated, which is family different from the past that children are expected to obey their parents’ decisions without objections.

A research about parenting practices among Indian immigrant families indicates that “ some parents are trying to us wolfville, learn new ways to discipline their children; some are learning new techniques from their children, who explain how American or Americanized friends are disciplined “ (Foner, p.8), and this study shows that immigrant parents are trying to change themselves in breakdown, order to get closer to their children. Moreover, as for the second generations, unlike the time as adolescents, instead of preferring to be alone with friends, they behave more caring about stage family members and family voluntarily provide support when there is a need. For example, language barriers were used to stage of culture, be one of the conflicts among some immigrant parents and children. However, after the family, change of point of view, some Chinese second generations no longer feel shame about of culture shock their parents’ inabilities of language interpretation, and an investigation shows that some second generations become more willing to help their parents deal with language problem, and some immigrant parents even improve their language ability from their growing children (Costigan, p. 1253). Besides, for some immigrant Asian-American writers, who realize their identity in two different cultures, appreciate their parents and share their appreciation by writing children books, and “many of them write about their past frustration of family breakdown definition, living two different cultures as well as use stories to express their new appreciation of the hard- ships their parents and grandparents endured and of the ethnic culture they transmitted “ (Mo, p.182). Truong Tran, a Vietnamese-American writer who has immigrated to of culture, the U.S since the family, age of five, writes an introduction in the book Going Home, Coming Home that “ It took me 25 years to return—to Vietnam, and to myself as a Vietnamese. In doing so, I discovered myself as an American. I am not one or the other but in fact both… It is a story of discovering that home is starbucks not a place rooted in definition, a country but a feeling rooted in the heart ’’ (qut. in Mo, p.10), and this well describes the feelings of the second generation Asian-Americans. Therefore, since both immigrant parents and children begin to change mentally and physically for a better acculturation, “ children are less prone to feel embarrassed by their parents and more willing to accept parental guidance, thereby reducing the likelihood of intergenerational conflict “ (Foner, p.8); in ideologies, other words, intergenerational conflicts would be minimized. Finally, intergenerational conflicts are inevitable in immigrant families, and definition these conflicts often bring out confrontations, discrepancies of values and assumptions, and disappointments of defiance between immigrant parents and children. Sometimes, intergenerational conflicts may raise negative outcome and harm the relationship between generations.

Nevertheless, intergenerational conflicts can be actually reduced and the relationship can also become tighter if both parents and stage of culture children try to change their previous point of views, which are against each other, and show acceptance of different values and beliefs. In that case, family relationship would gradually be strengthen and never break apart. Furthermore, if the society can contribute and assist immigrant families more; for instance, establishing free language learning for immigrant parents who have problems with English expressions, or organizing some consulting centers for immigrant parents to ask for help when there are conflicts between them and their children. If there are more assistances and help for immigrant families, intergenerational conflicts would be reduced faster and earlier instead of waiting for the second generation growing as adults, in which it would takes more time.
